TWENTY-TWO

Dawn sat up, her head sore from the impact of the crash. She rubbed her temples, and noticed a thin, lavender colored membrane in front of her. It was soft to the touch, maybe even penetrable, but Dawn didn’t dare to try poking her fingers through.

She looked around, observing a turquoise blue sky. At least she thought it was the sky, but as her eyes got accustomed and little bubbles floated out of the corners of her eyes, Dawn realized that what she was looking at, as a matter of fact, was the ocean’s surface. Definitely not going to try and see if this membrane is worth poking holes through or not, she thought.

“Guys?” she asked, only just then realizing that Elijah and Damon were missing. The pit in her stomach deepened and ached.

What if they didn’t make it? And I’m down here at the bottom of the ocean all by myself? What am I going to do? I can’t do this all by myself.

Hey, wait, did I just talk under water?

“Guys, are you out there?” she repeated. Okay, I definitely heard my voice underwater. I’m either going crazy, dead, or doing all this in the exact way I was supposed to.

Dawn got up and looked around. In the distance, she saw the cracked pearl shell debris among long, wispy sea kelp. Why was she so far away from it? Maybe the others were closer. There was only one way to find out. Dawn pushed the curtains of seaweed out of her way, trying to walk, but as soon as her foot landed on the sandy bottom, she heard a grunty old man’s voice.

“Look where you’re going, you bipedal biclops bim bam!”

Dawn gasped. She wasn’t even sure what she was just called, but it didn’t sound good. Even if it was the care bear version of an insult. She lifted her foot, realizing she had swung it right into a piece of coral where a school of colorful fish were frowning at her. “Oh, s-sorry,” she muttered. “Hey, what’s a bipedal biclops bam bam, by the way?”

The little red fish puffed out his chest. “Of course, doesn’t know fish speak either. Can you believe this?”

“I certainly can’t,” replied a stern yellow fish replied. “Tell her.”

“Well miss missy! For starters you’re a bipedal maniac because you swing those boats you call feet into our homes without a care in the world. I called you biclops because you have two of those beady, devilish eyes, and—”

“Wait, but you have two eyes too,” Dawn said.

“What did you just say to me, bim bam?!” the red fish hollered, his fins and gills flaring.

“You’re getting worked up, Harold, calm down,” the yellow fish mumbled. She turned to Dawn. “Look, if he already called you bipedal and biclops, you don’t want to know what bim bam is.”

“It’s fishspeak for—”

“That’s enough, Harold. Look, biclops, do us a favor and just get out of here before you destroy anything else, okay?”

“I… I’m sorry,” Dawn said. Poor fish, she thought.
